WWF have launched their Christmas advert which focusses on the importance of having a home. This is something that is often a prominent message during the UK’s cold winter months.
There are many worthy charitable campaigns highlighting the tough reality of homelessness during winter. However, WWF have put a clever spin on that message…they are drawing our attention to animals and habitat loss, with particular emphasis on African elephants.
Habitat destruction
Habitat destruction is something that is linked to so much of the wildlife on the IUCN’s endangered list. Now more than ever we need the likes of WWF to highlight to us just how important it is for humans and animals to have homes where they can live side by side.
African elephants
In the advert WWF has used African elephants as the example. African Elephants are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN red list. They need to be able to roam large amounts of land so as to find enough food and water to survive.
Since 1979 African elephants can no longer be found in over 50% of their habitats. That is largely down to three main causes; poaching for the ivory trade, habitat loss, and human/wildlife conflict.
WWF developing solutions
WWF are working hard to protect animals such as the African elephants and their habitats. We all need to help support them in their work developing solutions where humans and animals can co-exist.
