Analysis conducted by WWF charity officials show that greenhouse gas emissions across the globe could be up by nearly a third by 2020 unless drastic measures are taken by the global community. If this does occur, the possibility of climate change becoming dangerous across the globe could become very real.
The ‘Plugging The Gap’ paper, which was recently released at the UN climate negotiations in China. This shows that the world is currently on track to reach emissions levels of between 47.9 to 53.6 gigatonnes by 2020, even though recent science research shows that 40 gigatonnes or less should be the target of to avoid serious climate change.
Head of Climate Change at WWF-UK, Keith Allott, said –
While it’s clear that some countries are waking up to the transformations they we need to make to create a low carbon economy, other countries have failed to grasp the need for deep carbon reductions now, and are risking the safety and prosperity of all as a result. The climate talks in Tianjin need to see at least some indications that this trend is changing. It’s a simple case of the sums not adding up. If we let emissions grow to 50 Gigatonnes per year, we will have massively overspent our fixed carbon budget. We need to decrease annual emissions year on year and share the remaining budget in a way that is considered fair not only to the industrialised countries that already used much of the world’s carbon budget, but also to the developing countries that had no such opportunity.
WWF officials are warning that failure to begin mounting a major solution could put the world at risk of due to overspending its remaining carbon budget. Analysis shows that if action is taken now in industrialised countries, then the potential of stopping up to 4.3 Gigatonnes per year from being emitted into the atmosphere can be stopped.
