Virgin Money has announced it will extend its sponsorship of the London Marathon by another three years with the race now being called ‘Virgin Money London Marathon’. Under the terms of the deal Virgin Money will continue with its sponsorship of the event until 2020. The company’s charitable arm Virgin Money Giving is currently celebrating its sixth birthday.
Raised enormous amounts of money
The London Marathon is what inspired Virgin Money to establish its non profit online fundraising website. The site will continue to fulfill its role as official fund raising partner for the event. In the six years since the site has been launched it has managed to raise a whopping £344 million. Virgin Money began sponsoring the London Marathon back in 2010. The company hoped it would help participants raise over £250 million for charity by the year 2015. That goal was achieved by 2014 and in 2015, Virgin Money Giving exceeded it by £54.1 million taking the total amount raised to £315 million since Virgin Money began sponsoring the event.
Jayne-Anne Gadhia, Chief Executive of Virgin Money said: “I am delighted to announce an extension to Virgin Money’s sponsorship of the London Marathon, up to and including the 2020 race. I was one of the 37,675 people who participated in the 2015 Virgin Money London Marathon, so I speak with personal experience when I say that it is an incredibly moving and inspirational day. Not only does the London Marathon attract elite athletes from around the globe, tens of thousands of people run to raise money for good causes, making it the world’s biggest annual one-day fundraising event, year after year. We are proud to support this record-breaking fundraising feat through Virgin Money Giving, which has just hit its sixth birthday. Virgin Money Giving doesn’t take a penny in profit and that means so much more money goes directly on to the charities.”
Hugh Brasher, Event Director of the London Marathon said the event’s partnership with Virgin Money has been pioneering in the way it has managed to raise funds and the event is extremely happy that the partnership will continue until the 40th race in 2020.
