British Red Cross emergency rescue teams had to act fast to help evacuate 46 elderly residents from the flood threatened care home, The Meadows, in Scotland on Monday 8th August 2011. Things kicked off dramatically when the water level of the River Deveron rose dangerously high due to torrential rain close to the care home in Huntly, Aberdeenshire. This area of Scotland have been absolutely drenched in flooding thanks to three days of incessant rain.
Operations director, Ian Rideout, said –
We were called in to help as soon as the river showed signs of bursting its banks – and ensured all the residents were safely transferred to alternative temporary accommodation. The problem was caused by continuing rainfall which has brought chaos to many parts of Northern Scotland since the weekend. Our experienced volunteers are on standby to help with any weather-related situations that arise.
It is the second time in less than a twelve months that The Meadows has been evacuated due to the river threatening to burst its banks. This time it took eight emergency response volunteers to ferry residents from the home to other local care centres and using a fully equipped ambulance and three specialist patient transport vehicles.
