Two Greenpeace charity activists recently locked themselves in a giant iPod outside Apple’s HQ in California, in protest to the companies use of coal to power their iCloud. From inside the 8x10ft wide device, the activists broadcast audio messages from people across the globe in support of Greenpeace’s stance to demand Apple use clean energy.
Almost a quarter of a million people signed the Greenpeace petition asking Apple, and other companies like Microsoft and Amazon, to stop burning coal to power their data centres. This produces poison into the air that destroys the climate and brings on asthma.
Research has shown that Apple are the worst offender of them all, so Greenpeace’s action are fully justified in showing their workers that a change needs to happen. Apple is seen as one of the world’s most innovative and cutting edge brands, yet they power the iCloud with energy from a bygone era.
Isn’t it about time that companies like Apple started leading the world in clean energy innovation and not just technology? There are clean energy sources such as the sun and the wind that are available in unlimited supply. Why are companies like Apple not striving to be world leaders in all business practices, not just those that are profit related?

Apple needs to start using green energy instead of dirty coal if they truly want to be seen as the leaders in world innovation. It doesn’t just stop and start with the microchip.
