WWF UK research has shown that dinner parties have seem a massive upsurge in the last 5 years, with a whopping 312,000 hosted every single day in 2011. These figures come off the back of last month’s Earth Hour 2012, which showed that their were 13,000 dinner parties being held on the planet, per hour!
WWF charity officials, in conjunction with YouGov, found that 114 million dinner parties were held last year, that’s 20 million more than five years ago. So the saying ‘staying in is the new going out’ really does appear to ring true. WWF even teamed up with top chefs to create some sustainable recipes that will be great to enjoy at your dinner parties. to be enjoyed with friends and family, while switching the lights off and watching the sky plunge into darkness for an hour.
The recession is seen as one of the major reasons behind the massive growth in dinner party numbers, and that is back up by 31% of Brits who would host a dinner party because it’s cheaper than going to a restaurant. WWF also show which celebrities the British public would like at their dinner parties –
- 24% George Clooney
- 23% David Beckham
- 21% Kylie Minogue
- 20% Lord Alan Sugar
- 19% Adele
Not sure I’d want any of them at mine personally, not when they’d be rubbing shoulders with Steve Coogan, Simon Cowell and Liv Tyler!
Michelin star chef, Tom Aikens, said –
The survey really shows that dinner parties are a great way to get your friends and family together for an evening of fun. For WWF’s Earth Hour I held a special Livewell dinner at my restaurant in Somerset House but everyone can cook sustainable food and do something for the environment with the people you love.
So a big thank you for everyone that took part in Earth Hour 2012 last month, the global phenomenon that show we need to look after our planet before it’s too late.
