The National Trust are pleased to announce that their £1.2 million appeal to acquire a famous stretch of the White Cliffs of Dover coastline has been successful. The money raised will buy the 0.8 mile stretch of the Kent coastline that overlooks the port.
The heritage charity now own more than 5 miles of this famous coastal area between their visitor centre and South Foreland Lighthouse, completely uniting the stretch under their jurisdiction. More than 16,000 people donated to the appeal, alongside contributions from many local business and organisations such as –
- The Dover Harbour Board
- The Regatta Foundation
- Royal Oak Foundation
- 16 National Trust Supporter Groups
Alongside the support from these organisations was some big name backing from the likes of Dame Vera Lynn, Dame Judi Dench and Dover-born singing sensation Joss Stone.
Director-General at the Trust, Fiona Reynolds, said –
Thanks to the generosity and support of thousands of people we’ve reached our target nearly two months early. This appeal has tapped into something unique – the emotional connection that people have with special places such as the White Cliffs of Dover. The Trust will now look to enhance the quality of access to this new land and build on some of the fantastic nature conservation work that has been carried out by the team on the ground.
The White Cliffs are over 110 metres in height and have played host to many dramatic moments in this countries history. The Romans arrived here, as did the returning British armed forces the Second World War. They are now home to an amazing selection of wildlife and rare costal plants that can be cared for by the National Trust.
This acquisition is great news for not only the National Trust, but also the hundreds of thousands of people who come to visit the iconic chalk cliffs every year to gaze across the English Channel and think of times on by.
