WSPA UK is asking for your help to ask the contenders to be the London Mayor for 2012 that they pledge to stamping out wildlife crime in the capital. London is not only the capital of the country, but also the epicentre of the illegal wildlife trade. WSPA is asking for you to add your voice to the chorus of calls to the prospective candidates to commit proper resources to Metropolitan Police’s Wildlife Crime Unit.
Estimated to be worth a billion dollars a year, the illegal wildlife trade must be clamped down on immediately as more and more species slip closer to extinction. Simply click on the link below to add your voice to those of WSPA and their supporters in demanding that the Wildife Crime Unit funds are restored, to help police and prosecute animal traffickers in the capital.
WSPA UK Campaigns Manager, Rachel Alcock, said –
Wildlife crime is not some niche, illicit trade carried out by petty part-time villains. It’s a major source of revenue for a global network of hardened criminals – gangs, drug lords, terrorists all growing rich from the trafficking of wildlife, none about to have a crisis of conscience and stop what they are doing. As long as the enforcement of their illegal activities is under-resourced and under-prioritised, there will be wildlife at risk of exploitation, cruelty and even extinction. We need the new Mayor to help us stop this trade in cruelty.
