RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch 2010 – Saturday 30th January

The RSPB charity Big Garden Birdwatch will be kicking off again on the weekend of Saturday 30th January 2010, with this months event promising to be the biggest ever! This year almost half a million people will be taking part across the country to see how many different types of bird they can spot over the course of weekend, making this the biggest bird survey in the world.

Started in 1979, the Big Garden Birdwatch has been going from strength to strength each year, with over 6 million birds counted in the last 30 years. This survey is a great way to study nationwide animal patterns and also to help decide which birds the RSPB need to focus their conservation work on.

Last year the top ten spotted birds in the UK were –

  1. House Sparrow
  2. Starling
  3. Blackbird
  4. Blue Tit
  5. Chaffinch
  6. Woodpigeon
  7. Collared Dove
  8. Great Tit
  9. Robin
  10. Long-tailed Tit

Also, if you become a new member between 19th January and 31st March 2010, you will now receive an RSPB classic apex nest box, which normally retails at £11.99, absolutely free as a joining gift.

By encouraging people to count the birds in their garden for just one hour over this weekend, the information that is provided can help the RSPB prioritise their conservation work to specific areas and breeds where their support is most needed.
